Wynwood Galleries and Art Miami

The Wynwood Art District is where Miami's better known galleries and many of the satellite fairs are located, including Art Miami, Photo Miami and Green Art Fair. We managed to find some VIP passes at Bernice Steinbaum Gallery to Art Miami so headed there. Bernice had a booth at that fair and likely Art Basel Miami Beach as did many of the more successful dealers in Miami. Her gallery was displaying work by Chinese American artist Hung Lui so we explored while the gallery was largely empty as the fair was gearing up for its opening (her booth at the fair displayed all large scale video screen displays - see last video of this post):

Art Miami (+ exhibitor list) was very organized and well catered, well catered never hurts. I focused a bit on the spectacle and any electronic work. That's one way to approach the events; find the media of interest, note the gallery and city that is representing the work and then inquire about the artists from the pieces that stand out. It's impossible to consider it all, especially with crowds so I try to take advantage of the VIP opportunities. As a note, I'm not always interested or attracted to the best work, the best work in my opinion can't really be approached in a fair. That's the downside of the market, it is about selling work, and artists usually enjoy making it and don't care much for the rest of the process. The two don't often mix well unless you're Koons or Hirst or any artist that uses the market as a medium (more on this later as Koons unveils a sculpture on the beach later in the week). The following is a Sampling of images and video from Art Miami. For expediency I will be posting images like these then later adding information such as the Gallery, Artist and piece title (when and where available).
